Swansea City Council is planning to close the Dylan Thomas Centre with its wonderful DT exhibition and bookshop/cafe, and lease the building to Swansea University. The Council announced its intention out of the blue and is being very evasive, sending out different messages, one saying the exhibition will be housed in a room in the local theatre. Apparently the staff of the Centre have been promised jobs elsewhere and feel in no position to object, although of course they are completely devastated. Over 1000 people have already signed the online petition, including Carol Ann Duffy. Please will you ask your members to sign the petition and encourage others to do the same? The best way to get to the petition is to google “save-the-dylan-thomas-centre- petition”. Thanks
Hi Anna. From your society in Hertfordshire would you know of a poetry association or poetry courses (tel nos. emails to contact) which I could attend locally to St Ives, Cambridgeshire. As a non-driver I have strong immediate access to Cambridge City, including St Neots, Huntingdon towns. Also Biggleswade, Sandy and Hitchin should these be during day hours. What age range can I expect at poetry events/courses? Ever hopeful, Angela
Hello Angela,
You could try the following:
Anne Hawkes, Cambridge Writers, 15 Thorncroft, Saffron Walden, CB10 2AZ
R.A.Toy, Cambridge Poetry Circle, Osmoor, 47 Cambridge Road, Oakington, CB4 5BG
Mr Ken Osborne, Cambridge Poetry Group, 17 Shaftesbury Avenue, Royston, Hertfordshire, SG8 9DE
Hazel Newton, Huntingdon Writers’ Group, 20 Valiant Road, St. Ives, Cambs. PE27 3UP
There is also a group in Letchworth which I can’t find contact details for at the moment. It tends to be the case that poetry groups are populated by older people but certainly at Ver we welcome all ages. Hope this is helpful,
Gill
